Sound holic Festival: A peek into the Korean Indie scene

One of the biggest K-Indie festivals took place in Seoul last weekend which was the Sound holic Festival. Sound holic is an entertainment spectacle in Korea. Mainly it focuses on Korean indie bands but at the festival there is a diverse bunch of artists performed both from their own entertainment and also from outside. Before I came to Korea I listened to Korean indie music but not that much and during my winter semester at the university I got introduced to groups like, Post Panic, 24Hours and Bye Bye Badman. This got me more into the do some research about the Indie scene in Korea and I decided to go to Soundholic Festival with my friends to do new discoveries. Because of some personal reasons I could only attend the second day of the Soundholic Festival. When we first arrived the festival area looked a bit empty but within the day the number of people increased since bigger names like Daybreak and Urban Zakapa was performing in the late hours.

Royal Pirates performed on the X-stage right after Post Panic. Royal Pirates is a newly debuted band with a longer history and I was introduced to the band around 2010 with their song disappear. Royal Pirates’ style is a bit pop rock and the groups style is different from most of the artists at this event. After their performance we had the chance to get our CD’s signed. After Royal Pirates performance we moved to the club exit scene where 업댓브라운 was performing. We only got the chance to listen to 2 of their songs and enjoyed both of the songs we had a chance to listen to. After 업댓브라운 finished Hologram Film took over the club exit scene. It was my first time to listen to them and they surprised me. I really enjoyed their songs and I also found out that Hologram Film is a new band from 2012 but considering their short past they’ve managed to get the attention of the listeners pretty well. Here is my favorite song from Hologram Film Wolf.

In my search for something cold to drink I discovered 솔루션스 (The Solutions). The main singer was mostly singing in english and most of their songs were catchy. Here is my favorite, Movements.

SAM_4501 SAM_4530Waiting for Glen Check I made another discovery on my path 피터팬컴플렉스 (Peterpan Complex) which had a unique sense of sound, electronic but still with a bit of pop in it. This band has debuted back in 20o2 and is still on the track today. I enjoyed their performance and felt a bit sad that I just discovered them. Here is a taste of their music style, You Know I Love You. The last name on our list was Glen Check for club exit but somehow we didn’t get to see them perform since there were different DJ from around the world performing. Glen Check is a new discovery for me only a couple of days old and I enjoy listening to them a lot so I was expecting to see them on stage but my wish didn’t come true. Here is my favorite Glen Check song, 60’s Cardin. We decided to move to x-stage again to watch Daybreak but because of the heavy rain the stages outside were closed down and we decided to go back home.
