Yeouido – The Wall Street of South Korea
Yeouido is a large sandy island on the Han River in Seoul. Yeouido is the financial and banking district of Seoul – the capital of South Korea. Typically, National Assembly Building of South Korea, Korea Financial Investment Association, Gospel Church, Building 63 and the headquarters of major corporations are all located on Yeouido Island (LG, KBS, MBC …).
History of Yeouido:
During Joseon dynasty, Yeouido was just a place for raising livestock. By 1924, the first airport of Seoul was built on this island. The airport served both commercial and military purpose. At that time, Yeouido Island stayed within to the territory of Goyang. In 1970, a 6-lane highway was built to connect the island to the mainland of Yeongdeungpo District. This is a part of Han River development project raised by President Park Chung Hee. One year later, Yeouido Ward was established thanks to the development of Yeouido Island.
Festival on the island of Yeouido:
Yeouido is primarily famous for Cherry Blossom festival in April and the International Fireworks Festival in October every year.
